Mountain Walking in the English Lake District

Come and join us at Burnmoor Lodge for a weekend’s walking in the heart of the highest mountains in England.

Programme

The programme will take us to one of the most beautiful and exciting mountain areas in Britain. We will be staying at Burnmoor Lodge, a remote Victorian hunting lodge situated right in the heart of the mountains. The Friday at the start, and the Monday at the end, of the trip will be taken up with travelling to and from our accommodation: leaving two full days of guided mountain walking in the Lake District National Park. The actual programme will depend upon the weather and the wishes of the participants, but many of England’s highest mountains are within range of the lodge, offering us a variety of challenging walking.

Equipment

Your guide will carry all necessary safety equipment. You will be expected to provide all your own personal equipment. A full recommended kit list is provided – if any of the items are likely to present a problem to you, please contact us well in advance of the trip, so that we can arrange to obtain them for you.

Training

During the course of the programme, we will provide training in mountain skills such as navigation, and security on steep ground. This training will be tailored to the environment we are working in and the requirements and interests of the group.

Travel

The nearest road access to Burnmoor Lodge is the village of Boot, in Eskdale, where car parking is provided. We will meet you at The Boot Inn (The Boot Inn, Boot, Holmrock, Cumbria, CA19 1TG; www.bootinn.co.uk ; GR: SD 176011) in the village at 1.00 pm on the Friday and together we will make our way across the moor to the lodge. On the Monday, we will make our way back to the car park, aiming to get there for about 1.00 pm.

Accommodation

Burnmoor Lodge is an exciting, but very basic, place to stay! It is situated an hour’s walk across the moor from the nearest road, so all equipment and supplies have to be carried up by ourselves. It has no mains services, so all water comes from the nearby lake, and lighting and heating is by paraffin. The toilet is a chemical toilet in a hut in the garden. However, it is situated in a superb location, is nice and warm and has a good drying room! All meals are included, including a packed lunch every day. Because of the nature of the lodge, a successful trip depends on everyone being prepared to work together to undertake cooking, domestic and cleaning duties – but then, this is very much part of the Burnmoor experience.

Insurance

We are fully covered by public liability insurance, but you are recommended to arrange your own travel insurance. This should cover mountain walking.

Dates

Programmes will be running on the following dates in 2010:

Friday 16 to Monday 19 July

Friday 6 to Monday 9 August

Friday 17 to Monday 20 September

Friday 15 to Monday 18 October

Alternatively, if you have a group of between six and eight people who would like to participate in this programme, please contact us and we will be pleased to discuss available dates and quote you a price to run a programme specially for your group.

Because of the nature of the terrain in which we will be operating, this programme is only available to participants over the age of 18. In order to maintain a high-quality and safe experience, we will have a maximum group size of eight participants.

Cost

The total cost for each programme is £150.00 per person. A deposit of £50.00 per person will be required on booking. The balance will be required eight weeks before the start of your trip.
