The Sports Leaders UK Level 2 Award in Basic Expedition Leadership is a nationally recognised qualification that trains and qualifies teachers, youth workers and other members of the community to:
• Lead groups in lowland areas
• Have responsibility for the care of others when outdoors, including day journeys
• Organise base and mobile camps
It is the minimum qualification required by many local authorities and operating authorities of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme to train and lead groups in the Expedition section of the Bronze and Silver Awards.
Mountain Leader Training UK include the Level 2 Award in Basic Expedition Leadership on the qualification matrix in the National Guidelines for Climbing and Hillwalking Leaders. The qualification counts towards the Volunteering section of all three levels in The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.
Zest for Adventure is an approved provider of the award, and will be running the programme in partnership with Cedars Coaching Academy over five weekends in 2010/2011. The cost of the course is £300.00 per candidiate. This price includes:
• Candidate registration fee
• An award logbook
• One year's third party and personal accident insurance
• 90 hours of instruction and practical work
• Opportunities for 30 hours of voluntary leadership experience
• A certificate and badge on successful completion of the course
The qualification does not qualify people to lead groups in remote or mountainous areas. The Level 2 Award in Basic Expedition Leadership has 10 units which a candidate must complete before receiving the qualification. These are:
• Understanding the principles and practice of leading an expedition
• Understanding instructional and organisational methods in expedition leadership
• Planning and preparing for an expedition
• Understanding conservation and access for an expedition
• Apply basic navigation skills during an expedition
• Selecting and using appropriate equipment for an outdoor activity
• Planning and completing an outdoor activity
• Dealing with first aid and emergency situations whilst outdoors
• Understanding fitness and weather conditions in the outdoor environment
• Demonstration of expedition leadership
Each qualification requires a minimum of 90 hours of instruction and practical work followed by 30 hours of voluntary leadership experience.
